1.Antibacterial screening of Rumex species native to the Carpathian Basin and bioactivity-guided isolation of compounds from Rumex aquaticus.
Orbán-Gyapai O;Liktor-Busa E;Kúsz N;Stefkó D;Urbán E;Hohmann J;Vasas A Fitoterapia. 2017 Apr;118:101-106. doi: 10.1016/j.fitote.2017.03.009. Epub 2017 Mar 11.
Plants belonging to the genus Rumex (family Polygonaceae) are used worldwide in traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases caused by different microorganisms (e.g. bacteria-related dermatologic conditions, dysentery and enteritis). The present study focused on the antibacterial screening of Rumex species native to the Carpathian Basin, and isolation of compounds from one of the most efficient species, Rumex aquaticus. The antibacterial effects of n-hexane, chloroform and aqueous fractions of methanol extracts prepared from different parts of 14 Rumex species (R. acetosella, R. acetosa, R. alpinus, R. aquaticus, R. conglomeratus, R. crispus, R. hydrolapathum, R. obtusifolius subsp. obtusifolius, R. obtusifolius subsp. subalpinus, R. patientia, R. pulcher, R. scutatus, R. stenophyllus and R. thyrsiflorus) were investigated against Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. aureus, MRSA, Bacillus subtilis, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, S. pneumoniae, S. agalactiae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae using the disc diffusion method. Mainly the n-hexane and chloroform extracts prepared from the roots of the plants displayed high antibacterial activity (inhibition zones>15mm) against one or more bacterial strains.

Wu XM;Pei YH;Zhou JY Yao Xue Xue Bao. 2005 Dec;40(12):1127-30.
AIM: ;To study chemical constituents of the aerial parts of Rhamnus crenatus sieb. et zucc.;METHODS: ;The chemical constituents were isolated by chromatographic methods and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral analysis.;RESULTS: ;Five compounds were isolated and their structures were identified as crenatoside (1), torachrysone (2), emodin (3), emodin-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4) and beta-sitosterol (5) respectively.;CONCLUSION: ;Compound 1 is a new compound and the others were isolated from Rhamnus crenatus for the first time.
3.Yeast and mammalian alpha-glucosidase inhibitory constituents from Himalayan rhubarb Rheum emodi Wall.ex Meisson.
Suresh Babu K;Tiwari AK;Srinivas PV;Ali AZ;China Raju B;Rao JM Bioorg Med Chem Lett. 2004 Jul 16;14(14):3841-5.
The methanolic extract of rhizome of Himalayan rhubarb Rheum emodi displayed mild yeast as well as mammalian intestinal alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity. However, further fractionation of active extract led to the isolation of several potent molecules in excellent yields, displaying varying degrees of inhibition on two test models of alpha-glucosidase. Rhapontigenin, desoxyrhapontigenin, chrysophanol-8-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside, torachrysone-8-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside displayed potent yeast alpha-glucosidase inhibition. However chrysophanol-8-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside, desoxyrhaponticin and torachrysone-8-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside displayed potent to moderate mammalian alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Other compounds displayed mild activity on both the tests. Except desoxyrhapontigenin and rhapontigenin that increased Vmax, other compounds including crude extract decreased the Vmax significantly (p<0.02) in yeast alpha-glucosidase test. Further kinetic analysis on mammalian alpha-glucosidase inhibition showed that chrysophanol-8-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside, desoxyrhaponticin and torachrysone-8-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside may be classified as mixed-noncompetitive inhibitors. However, desoxyrhapontigenin and rhapontigenin may be classified as modulators of enzyme activity.
