1.Anthraquinones with quinone reductase-inducing activity and benzophenones from Morinda citrifolia (noni) roots.

Two new benzophenones, morintrifolins A ( 1) and B ( 2), together with 14 known anthraquinones and four other known compounds, were isolated from a chloroform-soluble extract of Morinda citrifolia roots. Of the isolated compounds, four known anthraquinones, namely, 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone ( 3), 1,3-dihydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone ( 4), 2-hydroxy-3-(hydroxymethyl)anthraquinone ( 5), and 1,3,6-trihydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone ( 6), exhibited quinone reductase (QR)- inducing activity in Hepa lclc7 cells, with concentrations required to double QR activity of 12.0, 8.1, 0.94, and 0.56 microM, respectively.
2.Simultaneous analysis and quantification of markers of manjisthadi churna using high performance thin layer chromatography.

Manjisthadi churna has been traditionally used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine and by traditional medical practices of India to treat hyperlipidemia. A rapid, simple and accurate method with high performance thin layer chromatography has been developed to standardised Manjisthadi churna using rubiadin, sennoside and ellagic acid as markers. Methanol extract of Manjisthadi churna were used for high performance thin layer chromatography on silica gel plates. The Rf of rubiadin, sennoside-A and ellagic acid were found to 0.48, 0.23 and 0.72, respectively with densitometric scanning at 280 nm and the calibration plot were linear in the range of 100-600 ng of markers. The correlation coefficients were higher than 0.99 were indicative of good linear dependence of peaks area on concentration. The rubiadin, sennoside-A and ellagic acid contents in Manjisthadi churna were found to be 0.014, 0.038 and 0.534% w/w, respectively. This method permits reliable quantification of rubiadin, sennoside-A and ellagic acid with good resolution and separation of the same from other constitutes of the extract of Manjisthadi churna. Recovery value from 95.66-102.33% showed the reliability and reproducibility of the method.

Rhynchotechum vestitum Hook, F. et Thoms. mainly distributed in the southern part of Yunnan Province of China, has been used as a folk remedy for the treatment of hepatitis. No information has been found in the literature about its chemical investigation. In this paper, five compounds isolated from the ethanol extract of the stem and root of the plant are reported. Four of them were identified as beta-sitosterol (I), lupeol (II), rubiadin 1-methylether (III) and rubiadin (IV). The fifth, an orange needle crystal (C17H14O6, mp 236, 5-238 degrees C) is a new anthraquinone compound named rhynchotechol. Its structure has been proved to be 1,6-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxy-2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone by spectral analyses and chemical methods.
