1. Competing 1πr* mediated dynamics in mequinol: O–H versus O–CH3 photodissociation pathways

To understand the competition between two 1πr* surfaces that are dissociative along different bond coordinates in mequinol, we present results from both TR-VMI studies and high level ab initio calculations. One anticipates mequinol to display ‘phenol-like’ dynamics along the O–H coordinate and ‘anisole-like’ behavior with respect to the O–CH3 coordinate. Ultrafast TR-VMI measurements uniquely enables us to extract both energetic and temporal information regarding the two different 1πr* driven dissociation pathways in question, while the detailed computational analysis of mequinol provides a necessary guide to interpreting the experimental findings. To the best of our knowledge these are the first studies to investigate competing 1πr* driven O–H and O–CH3 dissociation pathways in a heteroaromatic species.

The experimental work involvedmeasurement of one ormore of the following: resonance enhanced two photon ionisation (i.e. 1 + 1 REMPI) spectra of the chosen jet-cooled 4-YPhOH molecules at wavelengths around their S1–S0 origins; ‘action’ spectra for forming H atom products following excitation in the same wavelength range; and time-of-flight (TOF) spectra of the H atom products formed when exciting various of the resonances identified in the parent excitation spectra. The H Rydberg atom photofragment translational spectroscopy (PTS) apparatus and procedures have all been detailed previously. Samples of PhOH, 4-fluorophenol (4-FPhOH), 4-methoxyphenol (4-MeO-PhOH, also known as mequinol) and 4-cyanophenol (4-CNPhOH) – all supplied by Sigma Aldrich, with quoted purity >99% – were heated to, respectively, ~50℃, ~50℃, ~150℃, and ~200℃ in order to generate sufficient vapour pressures and seeded in ~1 bar Ar prior to expansion into the source region of the spectrometer, and passage through a skimmer en route to the laser interaction region.
