1.Clinical utility of dronabinol in the treatment of weight loss associated with HIV and AIDS.
Badowski ME1, Perez SE2. HIV AIDS (Auckl). 2016 Feb 10;8:37-45. doi: 10.2147/HIV.S81420. eCollection 2016.
Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, weight loss has been a common complaint for patients. The use of various definitions defining HIV wasting syndrome has made it difficult to determine its actual prevalence. Despite the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy, it is estimated that the prevalence of HIV wasting syndrome is between 14% and 38%. HIV wasting syndrome may stem from conditions affecting chewing, swallowing, or gastrointestinal motility, neurologic disease affecting food intake or the perception of hunger or ability to eat, psychiatric illness, food insecurity generated from psychosocial or economic concerns, or anorexia due to medications, malabsorption, infections, or tumors. Treatment of HIV wasting syndrome may be managed with appetite stimulants (megestrol acetate or dronabinol), anabolic agents (testosterone, testosterone analogs, or recombinant human growth hormone), or, rarely, cytokine production modulators (thalidomide).
2.Use of an ophthalmic formulation of megestrol acetate for the treatment of eosinophilic keratitis in cats.
Stiles J1, Coster M2. Vet Ophthalmol. 2016 Mar 3. doi: 10.1111/vop.12371. [Epub ahead of print]
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a compounded ophthalmic formulation of 0.5% megestrol acetate to treat eosinophilic keratitis in cats.
3.Fulvestrant for the treatment of endometrial cancer.
Battista MJ1, Schmidt M1. Expert Opin Investig Drugs. 2016 Apr;25(4):475-83. doi: 10.1517/13543784.2016.1154532. Epub 2016 Mar 8.
INTRODUCTION: About one third of patients with endometrial cancer (EC) relapse and face a limited prognosis, if surgery or radiotherapy are not feasible. The remaining therapeutic options are chemotherapy and endocrine therapy.
4.The clinical management of inoperable endometrial carcinoma.
Palisoul M1, Mutch DG1. Expert Rev Anticancer Ther. 2016 Apr 7:1-7. [Epub ahead of print]
Unresectable endometrial cancer, while rare, has a very poor prognosis, with a survival rate of 2 to 8 months. Although endometrial cancer is generally regarded as a survivable disease, the less common advanced and aggressive forms account for a large portion of endometrial cancer related deaths. Given the paucity of inoperable disease, randomized clinical data is lacking in this specific patient population. Management decisions regarding radiation therapy or systemic therapy are largely guided by the existing data in the setting of recurrence or second-line treatment, adjuvant therapy following optimal debulking, or in patients who are considered inoperable due to medical comorbidities rather than the extent of their disease.
