1.Metabolic fates and effects of nitrite in brown trout under normoxic and hypoxic conditions: blood and tissue nitrite metabolism and interactions with branchial NOS, Na+/K+-ATPase and hsp70 expression.

Nitrite secures essential nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability in hypoxia at low endogenous concentrations, whereas it becomes toxic at high concentrations. We exposed brown trout to normoxic and hypoxic water in the absence and presence of added ambient nitrite to decipher the cellular metabolism and effects of nitrite at basal and elevated concentrations under different oxygen regimes. We also tested hypotheses concerning the influence of nitrite on branchial nitric oxide synthase (NOS), Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase (nka) and heat shock protein (hsp70) mRNA expression. Basal plasma and erythrocyte nitrite levels were higher in hypoxia than normoxia, suggesting increased NOS activity. Nitrite exposure strongly elevated nitrite concentrations in plasma, erythrocytes, heart tissue and white muscle, which was associated with an extensive metabolism of nitrite to nitrate and to iron-nitrosylated and S-nitrosated compounds. Nitrite uptake was slightly higher in hypoxia than normoxia, and high internal nitrite levels extensively converted blood hemoglobin to methemoglobin and nitrosylhemoglobin.
2.Facile One-pot Transformation of Iron Oxides from Fe2O3 Nanoparticles to Nanostructured Fe3O4@C Core-Shell Composites via Combustion Waves.
Shin J1, Lee KY1, Yeo T1, Choi W1. Sci Rep. 2016 Feb 23;6:21792. doi: 10.1038/srep21792.
The development of a low-cost, fast, and large-scale process for the synthesis and manipulation of nanostructured metal oxides is essential for incorporating materials with diverse practical applications. Herein, we present a facile one-pot synthesis method using combustion waves that simultaneously achieves fast reduction and direct formation of carbon coating layers on metal oxide nanostructures. Hybrid composites of Fe2O3 nanoparticles and nitrocellulose on the cm scale were fabricated by a wet impregnation process. We demonstrated that self-propagating combustion waves along interfacial boundaries between the surface of the metal oxide and the chemical fuels enabled the release of oxygen from Fe2O3. This accelerated reaction directly transformed Fe2O3 into Fe3O4 nanostructures. The distinctive color change from reddish-brown Fe2O3 to dark-gray Fe3O4 confirmed the transition of oxidation states and the change in the fundamental properties of the material.
3.Synthetic modeling chemistry of iron-sulfur clusters in nitric oxide signaling.
Fitzpatrick J1, Kim E1. Acc Chem Res. 2015 Aug 18;48(8):2453-61. doi: 10.1021/acs.accounts.5b00246. Epub 2015 Jul 21.
Nitric oxide (NO) is an important signaling molecule that is involved in many physiological and pathological functions. Iron-sulfur proteins are one of the main reaction targets for NO, and the [Fe-S] clusters within these proteins are converted to various iron nitrosyl species upon reaction with NO, of which dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) are the most prevalent. Much progress has been made in identifying the origin of cellular DNIC generation. However, it is not well-understood which other products besides DNICs may form during [Fe-S] cluster degradation nor what effects DNICs and other degradation products can have once they are generated in cells. Even more elusive is an understanding of the manner by which cells cope with unwanted [Fe-S] modifications by NO. This Account describes our synthetic modeling efforts to identify cluster degradation products derived from the [2Fe-2S]/NO reaction in order to establish their chemical reactivity and repair chemistry.
4.Tuning Electron-Conduction and Spin Transport in Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticle Assemblies via Tetrathiafulvalene-Fused Ligands.

We report a strategy to coat Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with tetrathiafulvalene-fused carboxylic ligands (TTF-COO-) and to control electron conduction and magnetoresistance (MR) within the NP assemblies. The TTF-COO-Fe3O4 NPs were prepared by replacing oleylamine (OA) from OA-coated 5.7 nm Fe3O4 NPs. In the TTF-COO-Fe3O4 NPs, the ligand binding density was controlled by the ligand size, and spin polarization on the Fe3O4 NPs was greatly improved. As a result, the interparticle spacing within the TTF-COO-Fe3O4 NP assemblies are readily controlled by the geometric length of TTF-based ligand. The shorter the distance and the better the conjugation between the TTF's HOMO and LUMO, the higher the conductivity and MR of the assembly. The TTF-coating further stabilized the Fe3O4 NPs against deep oxidation and allowed I2-doping to increase electron conduction, making it possible to measure MR of the NP assembly at low temperature (<100 K). The TTF-COO-coating provides a viable way for producing stable magnetic Fe3O4 NP assemblies with controlled electron transport and MR for spintronics applications.
