Gadodiamide (Gd–DTPA–BMA) is one of the gadolinium complexes, most frequently used in nuclear magnetic resonance examinations due to its low chemotoxicity. Linear and non-ionic Gd–DTPA–BMA is a paramagnetic contrast agent with low osmolality. Clinical use of Gd–DTPA–BMA has been shown to be safe because of its high stability at physiological pH. The toxicity and prolonged half-life of the Gd3+ ion are known. When complexed, it becomes chemically inert and its rate of renal excretion is 550 times higher than the uncomplexed form. Although several studies reported the absence of evidence of endogenous transmetallation or the metabolization of the complex in vivo, its use is not recommended in patients with chronic renal failure. Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a rare side effect, but its development is associated with the use ofcontrast agents containing gadoliniumfor patients who present advanced stages of renal disease.
