1.Susceptibility of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to Cyantraniliprole Determined From Topical and Ingestion Bioassays.

The use of insect bioassay to establish baseline susceptibility and monitor changes in sensitivity to insecticides over time has been a key component of resistance management of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner in Australia for over 30 yr. Cyantraniliprole is a recently introduced insecticide, where toxicity is mediated at the ryanodine receptor. Baseline susceptibility of H. armigera to cyantraniliprole was determined in both topical and ingestion assays performed on field populations collected primarily from commercial farms across eastern Australia. Intraspecific variation in cyantraniliprole susceptibility amongst field strains was 9.3-fold in topical bioassays (n = 23 strains) and 2.6-fold in ingestion bioassays (n = 31 strains). The median lethal concentration in field strains was 28 mg/liter in topical bioassays and 0.065 mg/liter in ingestion bioassays, demonstrating that cyantraniliprole was >400-fold more toxic when administered orally than by contact.
2.Evaluation of Cyantraniliprole and Other Commercial Fly Baits under Laboratory and Field Conditions.

Laboratory and field trials were performed to evaluate the attractiveness and efficacy of commercial baits (cyantraniliprole; methomyl + (Z)-9-tricosene; dinotefuran + (Z)-9-tricosene; imidacloprid granular + (Z)-9-tricosene; and imidacloprid liquid + (Z)-9-tricosene). In choice tests; flies were most attracted to cyantraniliprole bait > dinotefuran + (Z)-9 > methomyl + (Z)-9 bait > imidacloprid granular + (Z)-9 bait > imidacloprid liquid + (Z)-9 bait. Significant degradation in bait efficacy was observed after two weeks of aging excluding imidacloprid granular; which began to degrade in field conditions after one week. Cyantraniliprole; the new fly bait active ingredient in Zyrox(®); had the longest time to knockdown in the laboratory tests; but on susceptible flies; achieved 95%-100% knockdown within an hour of exposure. Zyrox(®) was resistant to weathering for a week; and was more attractive to flies in the field when compared to methomyl + (Z)-9 bait.

Cyantraniliprole is the second xylem-systemic active ingredient in the new anthranilic diamide class. Greenhouse (2006), growth chamber (2007), and field studies (2009-2010) were conducted to determine the efficacy of cyantraniliprole for managing Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B and in interfering with transmission of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) by this whitefly. Cyantraniliprole applied as soil treatments (200 SC) or foliar sprays (100 OD) provided excellent adult whitefly control, TYLCV suppression, and reduced oviposition and nymph survival, comparable to current standards. The positive results observed in these greenhouse experiments with a high level of insect pressure (10× the field threshold of one adult per plant) and disease pressure (five adults per plant, with a high level of confidence that TYLCV virulent adults were used), indicate a great potential for cyantraniliprole to be used in a whitefly management program.
