Volatile chemicals are a group of very important compounds in natural products. Curcuma rhizome, which contains many bioactive volatile compounds, is a traditional Chinese medicine that has long been used for the treatment of several diseases. In the present study, a microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) method was developed for the analysis of four volatile components in Curcuma rhizome, including germacrone, furanodiene, curcumenol and curdione. Experimental parameters, including the pH, type and concentrations of background electrolyte, and microemulsion compositions (type and concentrations of surfactant, co-surfactant and oil phase) were intensively investigated. Finally, the primary compounds in the methanol extract of Curcuma rhizome were separated within 30 min using a running buffer composed of 2.31% w/v (80 mmol/L) sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 0.91% w/v (80 mmol/L) 1-octane, 6.95% w/v (937.5 mmol/L) 1-butanol and 1.
2.Phytochemical analysis and analgesic properties of Curcuma zedoaria grown in Brazil.

The present study describes the phytochemical analysis and analgesic activity of Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes grown in Brazil. The results showed that the hydroalcoholic extract, fractions, specially dichloromethane, and a pure compound, denoted as curcumenol (1), exhibited potent and dose-related analgesic activity when evaluated in several models of pain in mice, including writhing, formalin and capsaicin. Compound (1), which seems to be the main active principle from this plant, presented promising analgesic effects, being several times more potent than different reference drugs evaluated in the same experimental models. The calculated ID50 values (micromol/kg, i.p) were 22 and 12 when evaluated in writhing and capsaicin tests, respectively, and 29 micromol/kg in relation to the second phase of the formalin model. The lack of effect in the hot plate test suggests that (1) act by a mechanism which do not involves the participation of the opioid system.
3.Fractionation of volatile constituents from curcuma rhizome by preparative gas chromatography.

A preparative gas chromatography (pGC) method was developed for the separation of volatile components from the methanol extract of Curcuma rhizome. The compounds were separated on a stainless steel column packed with 10% OV-101 (3 m × 6 mm, i.d.), and then, the effluent was split into two gas flows. One percent of the effluent passed to the flame ionization detector (FID) for detection and the remaining 99% were directed to the fraction collector. Five volatile compounds were collected from the methanol extract of Curcuma rhizome (5 g/mL) after 83 single injections (20 uL) with the yield of 5.1-46.2 mg. Furthermore, the structures of the obtained compounds were identified as β-elemene, curzerene, curzerenone, curcumenol, and curcumenone by MS and NMR spectra, respectively.
