1.Summary of the British Transplantation Society UK Guidelines for Living Donor Liver Transplantation.
Manas D1, Burnapp L, Andrews PA. Transplantation. 2016 Mar 4. [Epub ahead of print]
The British Transplantation Society Guidelines for Living Donor Liver Transplantation was published in July 2015 and is the first national guideline in the field of living donor liver transplantation. The guideline aims to review the evidence relating to the evaluation process of both recipient and donor candidates; address the moral and ethical issues surrounding the procedure; outline the technical aspects of the procedure, including the middle hepatic vein controversy and the "small for size syndrome"; review donor and recipient outcomes and complications including donor mortality; and examine evidence relating to the advantages and disadvantages of living donor liver transplantation. In line with previous guidelines published by the BTS, the guideline has used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system to rate the strength of evidence and recommendations. This article summarizes the Statements of Recommendation contained in the guideline, which provide a framework for the delivery of living liver donation in the United Kingdom and may be of wide international interest.
2.Benzothiazole Sulfinate: a Water-Soluble and Slow-Releasing Sulfur Dioxide Donor.
Day JJ1, Yang Z2, Chen W1, Pacheco A1, Xian M1,2. ACS Chem Biol. 2016 Apr 7. [Epub ahead of print]
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) has long been considered a toxic environmental pollutant and byproduct of industrial processing. Recently it has become evident that SO2 may also have regulatory functions in mammalian pulmonary systems. However, the study of these effects has proven to be challenging due to the difficulty in administering SO2 in a reliable manner. In this work, we report the discovery of a new pH-dependent and water-soluble SO2 donor, benzothiazole sulfinate (BTS). We have found BTS to have slow and sustained SO2 release at physiological pH. Additionally, we have explored its vasorelaxation properties as compared to the authentic SO2 gas solutions. The slow release of BTS should make it a useful tool for the study of endogenously generated SO2.
3.Colonic stenting as a bridge to surgery for obstructive colorectal cancer: advantages and disadvantages.
Haraguchi N1,2, Ikeda M3, Miyake M3, Yamada T4, Sakakibara Y4, Mita E4, Doki Y5, Mori M5, Sekimoto M3. Surg Today. 2016 Apr 5. [Epub ahead of print]
PURPOSE: To clarify the advantages and disadvantages of stenting as a bridge to surgery (BTS) by comparing the clinical features and outcomes of patients who underwent BTS with those of patients who underwent emergency surgery (ES).
