1. Evaluation of sutures after immersion in nonalcoholic benzydamine hydrochloride mouthrinse by scanning electron microscopy
Gisele da Silva Dalben & Leda Aparecida Francischone. Clin Oral Invest (2008) 12:287–290
Considering that the surface was intact in all study groups, no mechanical changes would be expected. However, the mechanical resistance of these sutures under the same study conditions should also be investigated by tensile strength testing to provide objective data on this subject. In summary, immersion of resorbable sutures in water and in nonalcoholic benzydamine hydrochloride mouthrinse at different concentrations did not produce any significant change; thus, this mouthrinse may be safely employed as an antiseptic in the postoperative period after oral surgery.
2. Benzydamine hydrochloride on postoperative sore throat: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Chien-Yu Chen, Chien-Ju Kuo. Can J Anesth/J Can Anesth (2014) 61:220–228
Increasingly more investigators have turned their focus from non-pharmacological to pharmacological interventions in their efforts to attenuate POST. For example, lidocaine was traditionally used to protect tracheal intubated adults against POST. We propose benzydamine hydrochloride (BH), a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with additional analgesic and local anesthetic properties, for POST prevention. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the analgesic efficacy of BH on POST, but the results have been inconclusive. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available evidence to date regarding patient outcomes where benzydamine hydrochloride (BH) was administered to patients undergoing general anesthesia.
3. Effect of prophylactic benzydamine hydrochloride on postoperative sore throat and hoarseness after tracheal intubation using a double-lumen endobronchial tube: a randomized controlled trial
Jee-Eun Chang, Seong-Won Min. Can J Anesth/J Can Anesth (2015) 62:1097–1103
Benzydamine hydrochloride, a topical NSAID with analgesic, antipyretic, and antimicrobial properties, can be applied topically and systemically to treat various types of inflammation. Benzydamine hydrochloride is absorbed rapidly and completely following systemic administration, whereas topical application results in slower, less complete absorption. Thus, Benzydamine hydrochloride concentrations remain high in local tissue following topical application of the drug and may exert a therapeutic effect at the target site, limiting unnecessary systemic exposure. Topical administration of Benzydamine hydrochloride as an oral rinse has been shown to be an effective and safe treatment for pharyngitis and radiation-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck tumours.
