1. SEARCH FOR NEW DRUGS DOMESTIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS. 1. AZAPHEN
N. I. Andreeva, V. V. Asnina, and S. S. Liberman. Pharmaceutical Chemistry Journal Vol. 34, No. 5, 2000
Azaphen is the registered trade name of 2-(4-methyl-1- piperazinyl)-10-methyl-3,4-diazaphenoxazine, which was synthesized and pharmacologically characterized at the All-Russia Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the 1960 - 1970s. This drug differs in both structure and mechanism of action from the other known tricyclic antidepressants. The parent substance of azaphen is a yellow crystalline compound readily soluble in water. Although the drug was certified as an antidepressant in 1970 (Registration No. 70/356/1), the study of its properties has continued and the results allow us to expand the clinical use of azaphen. Pharmacological investigations of the specific (antide-pressant) activity of azaphen were performed using a broad set of tests. The results of testing showed that the most pronounced components in the spectrum of drug action are stimulation of the adrenergic systems and predominant blocking of the serotoninergic systems.
