At low energies (<3 eV), molecular dissociation is controlled by dissociative electron attachment for which the initial step, i.e., the formation of the transient negative ion, can be initiated by shape resonance or vibrational Feshbach resonance (VFR) mediated by the formation of a dipole bound anion. The temperature dependence for shape-resonances is well established; however, no experimental information is available yet on the second mechanism. Here, we show that the dissociation cross section for VFRs mediated by the formation of a dipole bound anion decreases as a function of a temperature. The change remains, however, relatively small in the temperature range of 370-440 K but it might be more pronounced at the extended temperature range.

Thyroid diseases have deleterious effects on lactation, litter growth and survival, and hinder the suckling-induced hormone release, leading in the case of hyperthyroidism, to premature mammary involution. To determine the effects of hypothyroidism (HypoT) on late lactation, we analyzed the effect of chronic 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU)-induced HypoT on mammary histology and the expression of members of the JAK/STAT/SOCS signaling pathway, milk proteins, prolactin (PRLR), estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR) and thyroid hormone (TR) receptors, markers of involution (such as stat3, lif, bcl2, BAX and PARP) on lactation (L) day 21. HypoT mothers showed increased histological markers of involution compared with control rats, such as adipose/epithelial ratio, inactive alveoli, picnotic nuclei and numerous detached apoptotic cells within the alveolar lumina. We also found decreased PRLR, β-casein and α-lactoalbumin mRNAs, but increased SOCS1, SOCS3, STAT3 and LIF mRNAs, suggesting a decrease in PRL signaling and induction of involution markers.
3.Hypothyroidism impairs human stem cell-derived pancreatic progenitor cell maturation in mice.

Pancreatic progenitors derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are a potential source of transplantable cells for treating diabetes and are currently being tested in clinical trials. However, it remains unclear how the milieu of pancreatic progenitor cells, including exposure to different factors following transplant, may influence their maturation. Here, we examined the impact of thyroid dysregulation on the development of hESC-derived progenitor cells in vivo. Hypothyroidism was generated in SCID-beige mice using an iodine-deficient diet containing 0.15% propyl-2-thiouracil, and hyperthyroidism was generated by addition of L-thyroxine (T4) to drinking water. All mice received macro-encapsulated hESC-derived progenitor cells and thyroid dysfunction was maintained either for the duration of the study ('chronic') or for 4-weeks post-transplant ('acute'). Acute hyperthyroidism did not affect graft function, but acute hypothyroidism transiently impaired human C-peptide secretion at 16 weeks post-transplant.

Ground- and excited-state UV photoelectron spectra of thiouracils (2-thiouracil, 4-thiouracil, and 2,4-dithiouracil) have been simulated using multireference configuration interaction calculations and Dyson norms as a measure for the photoionization intensity. Except for a constant shift, the calculated spectrum of 2-thiouracil agrees very well with experiment, while no experimental spectra are available for the two other compounds. For all three molecules, the photoelectron spectra show distinct bands due to ionization of the sulphur and oxygen lone pairs and the pyrimidine π system. The excited-state photoelectron spectra of 2-thiouracil show bands at much lower energies than in the ground state spectrum, allowing to monitor the excited-state population in time-resolved UV photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. However, the results also reveal that single-photon ionization probe schemes alone will not allow monitoring all photodynamic processes existing in 2-thiouracil.
