The commercially available curcuminoid mixture contains three different structurally related analogues (Fig. 1), namely curcumin (or curcumin I), demethoxycurcumin (curcumin II or DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (curcumin III or BDMC) (Anand et al. 2008) at a ratio of 75–78 %, 15–17 %, and 2–3 %, respectively. Although all three have been shown to be biologically active in most biological experimental systems, curcumin I is commonly found to be more efficient than curcumin II and curcumin III on various cellmodels (Agrawal et al. 2012; Anand et al. 2008; Tomren et al. 2007). On the other hand, there are suggestions that the mixture of all three is more potent than either one alone (Aggarwal et al. 2007). Finally, the potency of curcumin III as a highly purified compound in facilitating the clearance of Aβ in mononuclear cells has been clearly demonstrated (Fiala et al. 2007).
