2-Formyl-1-hydroxyanthraquinone, along with ten other known anthraquinones (1-hydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone, nordamnacanthal, damnacanthal, lucidin-?-methyl ether, rubiadin, rubiadin-1-methyl ether, soranjidiol, morindone, morindone-5-methyl ether and alizarin-1-methyl ether), isolated from the roots of Morinda elliptica , were assayed for anti-HIV, cytotoxic and antimicrobial activites. Only damnacanthal showed moderate activity against HIV. It was cytotoxic towards the MCF-7 (breast carcinoma) and CEM-SS (T-lymphoblastic leukaemia) cell line. Nordamnacanthal was very cytotoxic against the CEM-SS cell lines. Other anthraquinones that showed strong cytotoxicity towards the cell lines tested were lucidin-?-methyl ether (CEM-SS and MCF-7) and rubiadin (CEM-SS). Three anthraquinones viz., nordamnacanthal, damnacanthal and morindone, were found to have strong antimicrobial activity.

A novel anthraquinone, 1,3-dihydroxy-5,6-dimethoxy-2-methoxymethyl-9,10-anthraquinone (9) and a new natural product, 2-hydroxymethyl-1-methoxy-9,10-anthraquinone (8) were isolated from the roots of Prismatomeris malayana together with seven known anthraquinones, tectoquinone (1), 1-hydroxy-2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone (2), rubiadin (3), rubiadin-1-methyl ether (4), 1,3-dihydroxy-5,6-dimethoxy-2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone (5), nordamnacanthal (6), and damnacanthal (7). Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data. Some of the anthraquinones were tested for anticancer, antifungal, and antimalarial activities.

OBJECTIVE: ;To search alpha-glucosidase inhibitors from Rubia cordifolia.;METHOD: ;The alpha-glucosidase inhibitors were isolated by the column chromatographic techniques and the bioassay-guided method in vitro. A combination of MS and NMR spectroscopy was used to identify the chemical structures. The inhibitory kinetics of the inhibitors were also investigated.;RESULT: ;The chloroform extract showed high inhibitory activity, and three active compounds were isolated and identified as 1,3-dihydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone (1), 1-hydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone (2) and 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone (3). The IC5o values of compound 1-3 were all lower than that of acarbose. Compound 1 and 2 shown competitive type manner on alpha-glucosidase, whereas compound 3 shown noncompetitive type model.;CONCLUSION: ;Compounds 1-3 as strong inhibitors of alpha-glucosidase were reported for the first time.
