1. Recent bio-applications of sol–gel materials

Finland is very active in the field of sol–gel derived matrices for drug release. One example answers the growing interest in using releasing materials in the form of fibers. Thus, Czuryszkiewicz et al. prepared sol–gel derived SiO2 gel fibers, in which dexmedetomidine hydrochloride was incorporated by adding it to the sol used for fiber spinning. In fact, the incorporation of the drug into the sol–gel matrix can be done in various ways, and another convenient method is spray-drying. Thus, in another report from Finland, Laakso et al. evaluated the controlled release of dexmedetomidine from different spray-dried silica gel microparticle formulations.
